There are few foods that elicit a mouthwatering response quite like bacon can – especially to a keto dieter. Without the guilt that commonly accompanies the consumption of bacon, ketogenic dieters dive right in to this salty meat treat with great passion. So, when the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival held a bacon eating contest at their 2018 event at the Iowa Events Center, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the gold skillet winner was an advocate of the ketogenic lifestyle.

The 2018 Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival

Noted as the Best Food Festival in the state of Iowa by National Geographic, the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival celebrated its 11th year of glorifying porky goodness.1 In addition to the crowning of the Bacon Queen and issuing of awards for the best bacon production and the best bacon recipes from restaurants, the festival features a Bacon Eating Contest which has crowned 10 winners thus far.

Matt Weis: Keto Bacon Champ

While the strategies at this year’s Bacon Eating Contest varied from simple face stuffing to complex strategies involving soaking bacon in water, one swine-loving champ reigned supreme. Matt Weis, a resident of Ankeny, Iowa, took home the golden skillet for consuming a full pound of bacon in the fastest time.

Weis chose to implement a common eating contest strategy commonly referred to as the ‘python’ in order to gain an advantage over his competition. The technique involves swallowing fistfuls of bacon with very minimal chewing, washed down with gulps of water. However, his true advantage over his competition may have come in the form of being completely guilt-free about consuming an entire pound of pork.

You see, Matt Weis has been following a ketogenic diet for over 3 years as a way to lose weight and be healthier. Utilizing a low carb, high fat diet has aided Weis in losing over 60 pounds.

The Keto Diet and Bacon

“Bacon has pretty much the perfect ratio of fats and protein with no carbs, so I can actually eat only bacon if I feel like it,” Weis said.2

While a diet of bacon alone doesn’t sound like the most health-conscious way to go about losing weight, Weis is correct in his assertion that bacon is a staple in many keto diets. With a balance of approximately 3g of fat, 3g of protein and no carbs per strip of bacon, it does fit quite well into the low-carb, high-fat macros followed by the ketogenic community.
