Ivor Cummins never went to medical school. And yet, it is his perspective on medicine that drives his research into root causes and solutions for common diseases.

Speaking at the Low Carb Breckenridge Conference 20181, Cummins established himself as a force at the forefront of low-carb research and disease prevention. Unique in the medical community, Cummins possesses a background not in medicine but in engineering. By applying his engineering background to the complexities of modern medical conditions, Cummins seeks to find root causes and solutions rather than ways to simply mitigate the discomfort of diseases.

The Engineer Brain

Cummins embarked on his journey of medical discovery after getting blood test results which failed to meet his standards of health.2 When he was unable to get answers from medical professionals, he set out to find solutions on his own. Within eight weeks, Cummins resolved his concerns and shed unwanted pounds. This series of events set in motion the gears of pairing his engineering experience with medical research.

The distinction between a medical approach and an engineering approach — Cummins posits in his presentation — is that the engineer wants a root cause and a solution that prevents the negative result. On the contrary, a medical approach seeks to understand the root cause and find a solution that mitigates the negative results. To Cummins' engineer brain, this simply didn't make sense.

The Low Carb Solution

Though Cummins admits he has not found cures for diseases, he has set himself on the path to finding methods of prevention. That is to say, he may not have found a cure but he may have found a metaphorical vaccine.

Cummins used a low-carb solution to calibrate his own blood results to their maximum potential and has looked into other impacts of a low-carb prevention method. And he's not the only one. Researchers have found correlations between low-carb (or keto) diet methods and aging as well as cardiovascular health and prostate cancer.

Changing the Dialogue

Perhaps the most important takeaway from Cummins' presentation is the idea of viewing prevention as the ultimate cure.
