Anyone who has been overweight knows that one of the hardest times in your life can be going to high school. Teenagers of all weights can struggle with feeling confident, but for Queensland teenager Josephine Desgrand, self-esteem issues had her living in a world that was absolutely miserable– all thanks to her weight. Tipping her scale at just under 264 pounds, the 17-year-old was too embarrassed to even join a gym due to her size. After seeing unflattering photos of herself posted on a social media site, Desgrand made a snap decision to change her diet. Little did she know that in under a year, the teen would lose half of her body weight. Today, Desgrand's success has inspired thousands of followers to pursue their own journey towards their own fitness and health goals.
“A war with sugar”
When Desgrand was at her heaviest, her weight infiltrated nearly every outlet of her life. Not wanting to be seen shopping for clothing, she limited herself to older stores, which the teen reports made her feel “depressed.”
“I would look at my friends and be so envious of what they were wearing and what they could do. I used to worry about things like not fitting in seats and having to ask for seatbelt extenders,” Desgrand said in an interview with Australian news source, the Fraser Coast Chronicle.
One day after seeing an unflattering photo of herself posted on the internet, Desgrand decided that it was time to take control of her weight with a lifestyle change. The teen, an avid foodie with a big appetite, decided that the first step she needed to take was to cut all sugar out of her diet. The teen said that her new life motto is “I’m in a war with sugar and I’m winning.”
At her heaviest, Desgrand admitted that she would regularly consume thousands more calories than her family members when they sat down for dinner together. After cutting excess sugar from her diet, Desgrand moved on to her next “food villains:” carbohydrates and plates of pasta.
“I…cut out carbs so I haven’t eaten bread or pasta or even chocolate in one year,” she said.
In addition to a new diet, Desgrand also used YouTube workout tutorials to exercise at home, a choice she made both to save money and to work on building confidence before joining a formal gym.
Proving haters wrong
Today, Desgrand has proven that you don't need to have a personal trainer or expensive diet plan to drop down to a healthier weight. The amazing Aussie has lost half of her body weight, and now rocks a svelte and toned 130-pound frame– a much healthier size for her frame. She has even kickstarted her own Instagram and Youtube channel called “NoLongerFatJosie,” taking back control over a mean nickname that her haters used to refer to her as when she was at her heaviest. An inspiration to everyone (especially young women around the world), we're saluting this awesome Aussie for her amazing transformation!
