Pulling double-duty as both a software engineer and a nurse, Satminder Kaur Dhindsa quickly found herself gaining weight and suffering health side-effects due to her size. Thanks to the stress of her daily life, Dhindsa ballooned up to 213 pounds at her heaviest. She was even diagnosed with polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD), which caused her a number of embarrassing side effects. After struggling with both her self-esteem and her health, Dhindsa decided that she needed to make a change if she ever wanted to take control of her health and live a normal life again. Today, thanks to the ketogenic diet, she is healthy and happy at 143 pounds of well-toned muscle–and she's dedicated her life to inspiring others to invest in their own health by sharing her journey.

A whole new journey

At her heaviest weight, Dhindsa was suddenly diagnosed with PCOD after a childhood of good health. PCOD is a hormonal disorder which causes a swelling of the ovaries and can make it more difficult to conceive children; the condition is commonly exasperated by weight gain. After being prescribed medications to treat her PCOD, Dhindsa found herself dealing with a number of embarrassing side effects ranging from acne to facial hair to breast lumps. The dramatic change in her appearance took a serious toll on Dhindsa's sense of self-confidence, and she often found herself severely depressed.

The mirror as a motivation

One day, Dhindsa took a long look at herself in the mirror and decided that if she wanted to go back to living the life of the carefree girl of her childhood, she would have to make a serious change to her lifestyle. Dhindsa cut the carbs and switched to the ketogenic diet, focusing on filling her plate with eggs, low-calorie vegetable smoothies, and traditional Indian dishes like paneer.

Dhindsa said that her biggest motivation throughout her weight-loss journey was her own reflection. After remembering what she looked like before her weight gain and seeing that she could no longer fit into her favorite fashionable dresses, Dhindsa found the motivation to stay on track with her diet. She even confessed that she avoided having a “cheat day” for an entire seven months thanks to the massive motivation she found in her own mirror!

A healthier woman

Today, Dhindsa is down to 132 pounds, and she's happier than ever. Even better, her weight loss cleared her symptoms of PCOD, and she is no longer on medication. Soon after stopping the medicine prescribed by her doctor, Dhindsa saw her issues with acne and facial hair clear up, leaving her with a completely restored sense of confidence.

Dhindsa's advice for dieters? If you want to feel better, you must be willing to cut out the foods standing between you and a healthier lifestyle.

“People should avoid junk and food items containing high amounts of sugar. It’s your lifestyle that could make you overweight and to cure it, you will have to change it.”
