There are a few things that everyone knows about Lara Croft, even if they have never interacted with the Tomb Raider franchise: she's adventurous, she's brave…and she's one of the fittest women in the video game universe! In order to slim down for the new Warner Brother's reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise for the silver screen, superstar Alicia Vikander got on the ketogenic diet to play one of the world's strongest women.
Gaining muscle and eating right
Everyone knows that Lara Croft is one of the fittest heroines around, so Vikander's trainer Magnus Lygdback knew that a diet packed with protein would be just what the actress needed to get ready for her stint on set. Lygdback, who has worked with A-listers like Gal Gadot, Katy Perry, and Ben Afflick, recommended the ketogenic diet to help Vikander quickly shed fat while also building muscle. In just seven months, the starlet had put on a whopping 12 pounds of muscle while simultaneously maintaining her slim and svelte figure…we think that even Ms Croft herself would be impressed with this feat!
A careful balance
Striking the perfect balance between losing fat and gaining muscle required a delicately balanced diet. Lygdback and Vikander worked together five to seven days a week weight-training, but the starring role in the actress's transformation was played by her diet. For the majority of their training, Vikander nourished her body with fish and seafood and supplemented with plenty of healthy fats like MCT oil, coconut oil, and avocado. During the last few weeks of her training, Vikander slowly introduced healthy carbohydrates back into her diet in the form of dark, leafy vegetables. Lygdback complimented the actress on her commitment and dedication to her diet–because let's face it, you can't gain 12 pounds of muscle without some serious strength!
“It's always tricky the first couple of days, but [Alicia's] willpower is just unbelievable and she didn't complain, even though I could see she was struggling a little bit. She kept on bringing it every day,” the personal trainer confirmed in an interview with PopSugar.1
