It’s that time of year again where we make resolutions to lose weight, feel great, and aim to burn fat faster. There are plenty of opinions out there about how to boost your metabolism though, and it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. Nutritionist and fitness expert Cassandra Barns1 says the solutions may be simpler than you expect, and that a few simple steps can boost your metabolism and help you burn fat faster than ever.
It Starts with a Good Night’s Rest
Sleep is essential for any good weight loss or fitness regimen, and it’s something that people with busy and stressful lifestyles often overlook. Barns recommends adding a magnesium supplement to your diet saying, “Magnesium is vital for energy metabolism and may be especially supportive for relaxation and sleep, too.” Supplements are available over-the-counter and readily available.
After a good night’s sleep, Barns recommends individuals try high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts2. HIIT is a type of workout that revolves around high-intensity exertion (think sprints) in a short period with limited rest. While many of us focus strictly on cardio or weightlifting, HIIT jumpstarts our body’s energy usage and consumption, ultimately transforming our cells into healthy, vital mechanisms for metabolism.
A Clean Diet is the Best Way to Boost Your Metabolism
Above all else though, Barns says a cleaner, more balanced diet is the best way to aid your body in burning fat properly. She advocates for a lower-carbohydrate lifestyle in which we trim excess carbs to boost your body’s metabolic capabilities. When you do consume carbs, opt for items rich in fiber but low in sugars, because sugar can make your body’s system sluggish overall.
“Digestion–including transit time through the gut–can be affected by the bacteria that live there,” says Barns, so she also recommends a quality probiotic supplement. Do your research as these are available in multiple variations. Remember that the little daily choices count, as well. If you’re looking to snack while losing weight, choose healthier, cleaner options like sea vegetables3. Algae, kelp, and sea lettuce are rich in essential minerals like magnesium, iron, calcium, and iodine, all of which help improve your overall metabolism. Even better, continued consumption may contribute to more youthful skin, vibrant hair, and balanced cholesterol levels.
Don’t Over-Complicate Things
While the media likes to clutter your news feed with products and supplements which promise a better metabolism and increased weight loss, the real success lies in your daily choices. Start with a solid night’s rest, then opt for quality of supplements, lower carbohydrates, and a proper balance of exercise and dietary changes.
