Oatmeal is the perfect breakfast for a cold winter's day. It is so warm and filling, just what you want to start your morning off in a cozy and pleasant way. However, oats are not low carb and may completely throw you out of ketosis. So what can you do when you want a welcoming bowl of oatmeal while on a keto diet? Make “noatmeal” of course!

Rather than use rolled oats, our noatmeal is based around hemp hearts, almond flour, and flaxseeds. These powerhouse ingredients combine to make a thick, soft bowl of cereal that is very similar in texture to oatmeal. In addition, these ingredients are even healthier than oats which makes this recipe even more desirable!

Hemp hearts are simply hemp seeds that have had the outer shell removed, making them softer and easier to blend into recipes. Hemp hearts have a slightly nutty taste and are over 30% fat which is perfect for a keto diet! They are a great source of protein (25% protein in fact!) and are filled with vitamins and minerals like vitamin E, phosphorous, sodium, iron, zinc and more. As you can see, this is a perfect food to incorporate into a healthy breakfast.

Flaxseeds are also quite nutritious and add a lot of health benefits to our noatmeal. They are also full of healthy fats, antioxidants and also fiber. Flaxseeds have omega-3’s which have been shown to help lower the risk of diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Be sure to use ground flaxseeds in this recipe, and most other baking recipes, as your body will digest the seeds best when they are ground, getting you the maximum nutrients possible from the seeds.

If you are looking to add something extra to this bowl of oatmeal, you can add a few berries into the mix. Two strawberries, chopped and mixed in will taste fantastic. A handful of blueberries will be great as well. Fresh berries can help take this wintery meal into the summer months without adding too many carbs. Just be sure to use keto-approved berries! Maybe top to all off with a low carb maple syrup- wow! Now we are talking…

While having a super healthy breakfast is fantastic, you also want to eat something that you enjoy. Luckily, this noatmeal is very flavorful. The almond flour, chopped pecans and hemp hearts all add a great nutty taste to the dish, making it rich and hearty. The flaxseeds also have a nutty taste and they help to thicken the mix, making it the texture of traditional oatmeal. Then, there is the So Nourished Gold which sweetens the noatmeal perfectly. The complex taste of the golden erythritol and monkfruit are so similar to that of brown sugar that you will swear you are eating something non-keto!

Now that you are equipped with a delicious, low carb “no-oatmeal” recipe, it is time to give it a try and make it your own. Replace the pecans with some almonds, add an extra scoop of the golden sweetener or toss in a few berries. You can enjoy this breakfast every day, changing it slightly to keep it fresh and exciting! Enjoy.
