Morning, afternoon, after your work out or even as dessert, this chocolatey shake is amazing.
When following a keto diet, it is still very important that you get enough protein in your diet. Yes, fats are still the number one most important macronutrient but protein comes in second. Every keto diet will vary slightly but on average, the keto diet consists of 30-35% protein. Drinking one of these tasty shakes is a great way to get the protein your body needs.
Protein does a lot for your body. It promotes muscle gain and improves your performance recovery. Lots of people drink protein shakes after a hard workout in order to help heal their muscles. A good amount of protein and fats can also make you feel full and prevent you from eating other, unhealthy foods later on. A good protein shake can help you get fit, stay healthy, and feel full.
If you are shopping for protein shakes, you will quickly notice that most shakes are full of chemicals, additives, and fake stuff. I know I can barely read half of the ingredients on the back of a protein powder pack. I am not a huge fan of eating and drinking chemicals. Natural is the way to go! There had to be some way to make a more natural, delicious, and also keto-approved protein shake. We set to work to create this tasty recipe that fits the bill.
There are a few ingredients that add protein to our shake. The first is the collagen powder. Collagen powder is typically found in the skin and bones of cattle, pigs, and eggshells. I know, I know, this may not sound very appealing. However, all of the sources of collagen powder are completely natural. Once processed, the powder has very little to no flavor at all. Wouldn’t you rather put something natural into your shake than a whole bunch of lab-created chemicals? I sure would!
Collagen powder is packed with protein, having about 10 to 13 grams of protein per serving. We added even more protein to the shake by mixing in ground flaxseeds and chia seeds. Flax and chia are both natural, plant-based proteins that are also very neutral tasting. All of these awesome protein sources blend right into the milk mix and create a smooth, tasty drink.
To sweeten our low-carb protein shake, we mixed in some So Nourished Powdered Erythritol. Powdered erythritol dissolves in the whole milk easily, making the whole drink nicely sweet. Cocoa powder gives the shake a rich, chocolatey taste but without any of the carbs found in most chocolate drinks. We added a little coconut oil to our keto protein shake just to make sure you are getting those healthy fats you need every day. The end result- YUM!
If you love a good protein shake and want a delicious, low carb option, forget about those store-bought protein shake mixes. Use our recipe instead! It is easy, tasty, and will give you the protein and fats that you need on a keto diet. Enjoy!
