Super Easy Low Carb Frosting Recipe

Chocolate frosting tastes good on everything. It’s just a fact. Everything is better with some chocolate added on top. However, finding a tasty, keto friendly chocolate frosting can be quite the challenge. Lots of keto frostings either have not enough chocolate flavor, are too oily or too dry. Making the perfect consistency frosting is like an art. Our low carb chocolate frosting will help you become a true frosting artist.

After making batch after batch of keto frostings that didn’t have the right consistency we finally discovered the secret- use butter AND cream cheese as the base of the frosting. Just butter based frostings always seemed too plain and too greasy. Frostings made with just cream cheese were a little too tangy to pair with multiple kinds of cake. Too much cream cheese also can make the frosting too soft. The perfect frosting uses 1/3 cream cheese and 2/3 butter as the base. This mix makes the best taste and texture. Try it once and you will see!

Of course our keto chocolate frosting can’t be made with regular sugar. Way too many carbs there! We use So Nourished powdered erythritol which has an amazing, sweet taste. Erythritol is made from fruit so it is completely natural- no chemical sweeteners here! It is naturally low in carbs and perfect for keto dieters.

The powdered erythritol melts almost instantly into the frosting. There is no gritty texture from the sweetener, just smooth, saccharine flavor. This is especially important as the cocoa powder we use in the recipe is unsweetened. It needs a sugary boost! Unsweetened cocoa powder is super rich but it can be bitter if there is no sweetener added. Erythritol does the trick, making the chocolate flavor pop. The vanilla extract in the frosting recipe also helps bring out the chocolate taste. A little vanilla goes a long way!

Once you have whipped up a batch of our keto chocolate frosting, you can store it in the fridge for up to a week. Let it sit at room temperature for about a hour or two to soften up before using. Once the frosting is soft and spreadable, you can use it to ice a cake, top some low carb cupcakes, add a dollop to your ice cream or use it to decorate some keto cookies. The possibilities are endless! I have even had some frosting mixed with a bowl of strawberries as an easy low carb dessert. That is a dessert that I still crave to this day!
